Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has provided a concerning update regarding his serious injury in a recent interview with Celtic TV. The 39-year-old Danish player announced that he has undergone “clean-up” surgery, revealing significant damage and a serious infection within the joint.
Celtic’s Kasper Schmeichel Faces a Race Against Time at 39
In his discussion with the club channel, Schmeichel indicated that he may require an additional one to three operations before considering a return to the field. He candidly described his current situation as “a strange reality” after facing months of uncertainty about his condition.
The timing of this injury adds to the challenge: Schmeichel’s contract with Celtic concludes at the end of the season, placing both the club and his playing career in jeopardy. With the Scottish Premiership season entering its final stage, Schmeichel has not seen playtime in months. Denmark’s absence from the 2026 World Cup alleviates some pressure, yet he faces a difficult path ahead.
“The status at the moment is I’ve had one surgery, which was an exploratory surgery and a clean-up surgery. The status is there is a lot of damage in there, a lot of infection, and I am going to need another one or two, maybe three surgeries,” he said. “Yeah, it’s a strange reality at the moment and it has been a strange couple of months trying to wrap my head around it.” [Celtic TV]
