PSG and Bayern Munich Set for Champions League Semifinal Showdown

Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich prepare to clash on Wednesday for the second leg of their Champions League semifinal, following a thrilling 5-4 encounter last week.

While the return match in Munich may not replicate the same level of excitement showcased in Paris, coaches Luis Enrique and Vincent Kompany are determined to achieve a memorable outcome.

“More, even more,” Kompany stated in Paris when asked about his key message to Bayern’s players for the decisive second leg. Arsenal will host Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, with their matchup currently tied 1-1. The winner of this semifinal will secure a place in the final on May 30 at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.

Stellar Semifinals

Champions League semifinals often prove to be more memorable than the finals themselves. Last year, an exhilarating contest between Inter Milan and Barcelona received widespread acclaim, similar to the excitement generated by the PSG-Bayern opener. The first leg in Barcelona, ending in a 3-3 draw, set the stage for Inter’s dramatic 4-3 extra time triumph at San Siro.

In 2022, Real Madrid mounted a dramatic comeback in stoppage time during the second leg against Manchester City, with Rodrygo scoring two goals that forced extra time. Karim Benzema then secured the victory with a penalty kick, leading to a 3-1 win after City’s 4-3 first leg victory in Manchester.

Notable comebacks also occurred in 2019, as Liverpool and Tottenham both staged remarkable performances against Barcelona and Ajax, respectively, during their semifinal second legs.

It has been around eight years since a truly captivating final, when substitute Gareth Bale’s iconic bicycle kick helped Madrid clinch a 3-1 victory over Liverpool in Kyiv. Last year, PSG dominated the final, winning 5-0 against Inter in an uncompetitive match.

Arena of Entertainers

Munich witnessed PSG’s finest game last season against Inter as they sought to fulfill their Qatari owners’ ambition of becoming European champions for the first time. The Allianz Arena played host to Bayern’s successful Champions League campaign this season, where they won all six of their home matches, scoring 20 goals including a thrilling four-goal performance against Real Madrid in the quarterfinals a few weeks ago.

Munich is also the frontrunner to host the Champions League final again in 2028, with UEFA expected to confirm this decision in September.

Penalty Debates

All four semifinal teams were awarded and converted penalty kicks last week. Arsenal received a fifth penalty, which was later overturned after a review by the referee. Since the introduction of the video assistant referee (VAR) system at the 2018 World Cup, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of penalties awarded in top-tier matches.

The five penalty decisions last week faced scrutiny, with many feeling they were not universally justified. UEFA’s view on handball incidents has sparked debates among coaches, players, and fans. Roberto Rosetti, UEFA’s director of refereeing, has stated, “we don’t like soft penalties” and has warned against “microscopic VAR interventions”, which appeared to occur last week.

In each handball case, the ball deflected off the respective body of Bayern’s Alphonso Davies and Arsenal’s Ben White before making contact with their arms, which were not tightly held to their bodies—a situation that is typically not considered a penalty in the English Premier League but likely is in UEFA competitions. Rosetti plans to meet soon with refereeing officials from Europe’s major leagues to encourage greater clarity and consistency next season.
