Manchester United Connections Persist as Pique Faces Suspension in Spain

Manchester United has maintained strong ties with Spanish football in recent years. Antony officially joined Real Betis on a permanent deal last summer. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford has spent this season Barcelona-officially-announce-marcus-rashford-signing/”>on loan at Barcelona. However, his long-term future remains uncertain after the Catalan side missed the €30 million buy-option deadline.

Another former Manchester United player has found himself at the center of controversy in Spain. According to an official statement released by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), former defender Gerard Pique has received a two-month suspension from official football activity following a confrontation with a referee. This incident occurred after FC Andorra’s recent defeat against Albacete. Pique now serves as co-owner of the club after retiring from professional football in 2022. The RFEF statement also confirmed that Pique received an additional six-match suspension.

His ban is linked to what has been described as ‘minor violence toward referees’. Referee Alonso de Ena Wolf reportedly noted comments from Pique in his official report following the confrontation. Other members of Andorra’s staff were also penalized due to the incident, including club president Ferran Vilaseca and sporting director Jaume Nogues. Pique spent four years on Manchester United’s roster after joining from Barcelona’s academy in 2004. Although first-team opportunities were limited, he still made 23 senior appearances for the club.

Pique collected several honors under Sir Alex Ferguson, including the Premier League title and Champions League in 2008. He later returned to Barcelona, emerging as one of the most successful defenders of his generation. Over his career, he won multiple La Liga and Champions League titles and contributed to Spain’s victories in both the World Cup and European Championship. FC Andorra currently sits 10th in Spain’s second division and is striving for a stronger finish to the campaign despite ongoing controversy surrounding its ownership structure.
