Nicky Butt Calls for Major Overhaul of Manchester United Squad Ahead of New Season

Nicky Butt has criticized the current state of the Manchester United squad and urged for significant changes as the club prepares for the 2026/2027 season.

Despite Manchester United celebrating their return to the Champions League next season, Butt emphasized that this places additional pressure on INEOS to revamp the team during the summer transfer window.

Why the Upcoming Window is Pivotal for United

Recent performances from teams like Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have shown the Red Devils the standard they must reach to advance in the competition.

In addition to their European commitments, United cannot afford another season where they exit both domestic cup competitions in the early rounds.

Strength in squad depth will be crucial, but it is equally important to offload players considered below standard.

The Four Reds Tipped to Leave by Butt

Butt has pointed out that INEOS should consider starting with Manuel Ugarte, Joshua Zirkzee, Noussair Mazraoui, and Tyrell Malacia.

Malacia is set to leave due to his contract expiring, while potential buyers will need to be found for the other three players.

Ugarte, Mazraoui, and Zirkzee all joined the club in the summer of 2024 but have made little impact in the Premier League.

Mazraoui has perhaps shown the most promise, though his inconsistent injury record may compel United to cash in sooner rather than later.

As for Ugarte, he has attracted interest from several clubs in recent weeks, including Galatasaray, who engaged in talks for a potential deal back in January.

What Did Butt Have to Say About His Former Club?

“It was highlighted when United played Leeds, the team that day was so young and so average,” Butt told PaddyPower, as reported by the Metro.

“They’re going to get rid of a few – Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, Tyrell Malacia, [and] Noussair Mazraoui. Leny Yoro might go on loan.

“They need a few players, not all starters, but they’re going to be playing 60 games next season. You need a squad.”
