Real Madrid Fines Players Half a Million Euros Following Training Altercation

  • Federico Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni got into a row during training

  • Valverde suffered a head injury from the altercation

  • Real Madrid fined players 500,000 euros each

Real Madrid fined midfielders Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni half a million euros (around INR 5.56 crore) each on Friday (May 8, 2026) for their altercation during practice. The substantial fines followed a confrontation between the players during a team training session.

Valverde shared on social media that no punches were thrown, but he Barcelona“>knocked his head on a table and sustained a small cut that required a visit to the hospital. He described the incident as a “meaningless fight” with a teammate and stated, “everything has been blown out of proportion.”

Despite Valverde’s remarks, the club viewed the incident as a significant breach of team discipline, leading to the hefty fines, which are considerable even for top football players. These penalties reflect the damage the club was facing to its reputation as it navigates a tumultuous end to a disappointing season.

Los Blancos stated that their disciplinary action was finalized after both players expressed “complete remorse for what happened and apologized to one another.” They also conveyed apologies to their teammates, the coaching staff, and club supporters, indicating their willingness to accept any disciplinary measures the club considered necessary.

Tchouameni returned to training with Madrid on Friday, just two days before they travel to Barcelona for a high-stakes El Clasico clash. Madrid faces a must-win situation to prevent Barcelona from being crowned La Liga champions.

After learning about the fine, Tchouameni publicly apologized to the club and its fans via social media, stating, “What happened this week in training is unacceptable. I say this while thinking about the example we are expected to set for young people, whether in football or at school. Above all, I am sorry for the image we projected of the club.”

Valverde was absent from practice due to his head injury. Both players are set to represent their countries in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, with Tchouameni playing for France and Valverde for Uruguay.

Eventful End To Dismal Season

The altercation between the long-time teammates occurred following earlier disputes in training sessions. Reports indicated that tempers flared over the club’s decision to part ways with coach Xabi Alonso after only a few months.

This incident was not isolated, as Alvaro Carreras also admitted to being involved in a “minor” altercation with a teammate. Spanish media reported a scuffle between him and fellow defender Antonio Rudiger.

Alvaro Arbeloa, who was promoted from Madrid’s reserve team after Alonso’s dismissal in January, will face scrutiny regarding the issues within the changing room during the customary pre-game press conference at Camp Nou on Saturday.

With the club facing a second consecutive season without trophies, rumors circulate that club president Florentino Perez might consider reappointing Jose Mourinho to revitalize the underperforming team.
