Manchester United‘s Under-21 Team to Face Brighton in Premier League 2 Play-off Final

Manchester United’s first team faced challenges during the 2025/26 campaign, particularly in cup competitions. They played the fewest matches possible across various tournaments.

The club experienced a surprising Carabao Cup exit to League Two side Grimsby Town in the opening round.

Manchester United also fell out of the FA Cup during the third round against Brighton.

In comparison to the previous season, the current situation appears even more daunting. Last year, Manchester United finished 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final.

This poor performance meant that Old Trafford will not host European football this season.

Nonetheless, while the senior team dealt with a lighter fixture schedule, Manchester United’s academy teams continued to thrive in multiple competitions.

Now, the Under-21 side has officially learned their opponents for the Premier League 2 play-off final after defeating Manchester City in the semi-finals.

In that semi-final match, Floyd Samba scored for City just three minutes in, but United responded with three goals in 14 minutes. A brace from Chido Obi and a penalty from Shea Lacey put the Red Devils ahead 3-1 by half-time.

Shortly after the second half began, Jack Moorhouse increased the lead to 4-1. Mahamadou Sangare quickly scored for Manchester City, making it 4-2. In the 82nd minute, Floyd Samba netted his second, but City ultimately fell short with a 4-3 defeat.

Brighton & Hove Albion advanced by overcoming Tottenham Hotspur in the other semi-final, setting the stage for a decisive final matchup.

This means Manchester United will now compete against Brighton in the Premier League 2 play-off final, as confirmed on the Premier League website.

The young Reds have shown impressive performances on their journey to the final. United secured their spot after defeating Crystal Palace 2-0 in the quarter-finals, with goals from Dan Armer and Chido Obi, who has been in excellent form.

The official Manchester United website confirmed the result following a solid display from Travis Binnion’s squad.

As excitement grows around several players in the Under-21 team, Chido Obi is among those attracting considerable attention.

Others in the setup have also delivered consistent performances throughout the season.

The Premier League 2 play-off final presents another critical opportunity for Manchester United’s young talents to conclude the season positively and aim for silverware, adding to an already promising year for the academy.

Attention will now focus on the final as United seeks to finish the season with an important trophy at the youth level.

Additionally, United is set to compete in the FA Youth Cup final against City next week.
