Mourinho Addresses Future Amid Speculation of Real Madrid Return

Benfica head coach Jose Mourinho has responded to inquiries regarding his future following various reports about his potential next season. The Portuguese manager’s name has resurfaced as a possible candidate for his former club after they parted ways with their coach in January.

According to The Athletic in April, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has been actively pursuing Mourinho’s return, as current coach Alvaro Arbeloa is expected to be dismissed at the end of the season due to a disappointing performance.

Mourinho managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, securing three trophies during his tenure. As he prepares for Benfica’s penultimate match of the season against Braga, he has addressed questions about his future.

“I want to clarify one thing. In football, it is not the professionals who are interested in leaving or staying. When something happens, it is the clubs that are interested and whether or not they begin the procedures to sign the people they love,” Mourinho said, as reported by as.

Mourinho added, “Real Madrid continues to be talked about and I continue to avoid the topic with sincerity. I have not had contact with the president or any other club.”

He also stated, “In the season finale, I don’t talk to anyone. I have not had any contact with Real Madrid and I will not have it until after the last League match against Estoril. Afterwards, there is a period of one week in which I will be free to speak with whoever I consider appropriate.”

The 63-year-old has made it clear that he will stay focused on Benfica until the season concludes. However, following that, discussions may begin to intensify. Benfica fans are likely appreciative of this professional commitment, despite their title aspirations in Liga Portugal having come to an end.

Jose Mourinho previously managed Manchester United from 2016 to 2018, winning both the EFL Cup and UEFA Europa League in his first season, before finishing second in the league the following year.

With the Red Devils also seeking their next manager, it appears unlikely that Mourinho will return, especially given his departure from the club in 2018 following strained relationships with players and poor results.

While Mourinho remains focused on Benfica’s immediate games, external speculation regarding his future is likely to increase as the season’s end approaches.
