Tottenham Hires De Zerbi as New Head Coach on Five-Year Contract
Tottenham Hotspur has appointed Roberto De Zerbi as the head coach on a long-term contract spanning five years, effective from 31 March 2026. De Zerbi takes over from Igor Tudor, who had a brief tenure, marking him as Spurs’ third manager for the 2025/26 season.
The club was facing challenges near the relegation zone at the time of the appointment, creating a significant expectation for De Zerbi to achieve both short-term survival and a revival of the team’s traditional attacking, high-pressing style.
“Roberto and I talked about Tottenham when we worked together at Brighton, because it was one of the clubs he looked to when he was growing up, for the flair, ‘the game is about the glory’, the Bill Nicholson way. He was very aware, going into Tottenham, not only the size of the club and the expectations, not just on staying up this season, but the way they play, and what the fans expect there. I think he’s a good fit there, he is a fantastic coach, a really good person, an intense character. I think the fans will really respond to his way of coaching the team from the technical area.”
This endorsement comes from Paul Barber, the CEO of Brighton and a lifelong Tottenham supporter. Barber, who played a key role in De Zerbi’s appointment at Brighton following Graham Potter’s departure, emphasized the Italian coach’s strong alignment with Tottenham’s values.
Barber’s remarks underscore De Zerbi’s long-standing admiration for Tottenham’s tradition of flair and “the glory,” echoing Bill Nicholson’s renowned philosophy. His understanding of the club’s stature, fan expectations, and playing style presents a personal endorsement of De Zerbi as a high-intensity, technically adept coach likely to resonate with Tottenham supporters.
De Zerbi is recognized for his proactive, possession-driven approach, characterized by high pressing and attacking flair—qualities that many Tottenham fans have historically sought, despite mixed results in his previous positions, including stints at Brighton and Marseille.
In the early days of his leadership at Spurs, De Zerbi will aim to elevate the team’s standing in the league while establishing a foundation for long-term progress.
