James Maddison Makes Season Debut as Tottenham Draws with Leeds

Tottenham Hotspur’s winless home streak continued on Monday evening as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Leeds United.

Spurs last celebrated a Premier League victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in December 2025, when they secured a 2-0 win over Brentford. The team had a chance to break the home drought by defeating Leeds United and establishing a four-point cushion above the relegation zone. However, Roberto De Zerbi’s squad struggled against the Whites, who nearly clinched a late winner through Sean Longstaff, only to be thwarted by Antonin Kinsky’s excellent save.

This result proved disappointing for Tottenham, who managed just one point from the fixture. West Ham had previously suffered a defeat in the gameweek, losing 1-0 to Arsenal, providing Spurs with an opportunity they could not seize. Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith emphasized the positives that Tottenham must take from the draw, including the return of James Maddison.

James Maddison Makes First Appearance of the Season for Tottenham

The absence of depth in Tottenham’s attacking lineup was evident as they failed to penetrate the Leeds defense for a second time. Injuries have limited De Zerbi’s attacking options, but he turned to James Maddison from the bench as Spurs looked for a late winner.

After sitting out the first three matches of the season, the England international was subbed in for his first appearance in the 85th minute, triggering an eruption from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Maddison had been sidelined for over nine months due to an ACL injury sustained during a pre-season friendly against Newcastle United.

With a substantial amount of stoppage time added, Maddison had 20 minutes on the pitch. It was clear that he was still adjusting to the game’s tempo, lacking match fitness and physicality. Following a penalty concession in the 74th minute, Maddison assisted Tottenham in regaining momentum against their opponents.

The veteran midfielder’s introduction helped restore some control in Tottenham’s midfield. As anticipated, Maddison positioned himself smartly in the opposition’s half, demanded the ball, slowed down the tempo, and created several scoring opportunities in the closing moments. He nearly won a penalty after being fouled by Lucas Nmecha in stoppage time, but the referee opted not to award it and VAR confirmed the decision, ruling that Nmecha touched the ball first before committing the foul.
