Iker Casillas Voices Opposition to Jose Mourinho’s Return to Real Madrid

Iker Casillas made it clear that he respects Jose Mourinho as a coach, but does not want him back at Real Madrid.

That stance matters because Casillas is not just another former player reacting to a rumor. He is one of Real Madrid’s great modern symbols, and his own history with Mourinho makes the answer impossible to ignore.

The message was measured, but still firm. Casillas did not attack Mourinho’s ability; he simply argued that Real Madrid should look elsewhere.

Iker Casillas rejects Jose Mourinho’s potential Real Madrid return

Iker Casillas on X wrote amid fresh links between Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid, his position was respectful but direct.

“I have no problem with Mourinho. He seems like a great professional to me. I don’t want him at Real Madrid.

“I think other coaches would be better equipped to coach at the club of my life. Personal opinion. Nothing more,” Casillas tweeted.

That final line was important. Casillas framed it as his view, not a campaign against Mourinho.

Still, the message carries weight because of their past. Mourinho coached Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, winning La Liga with a 100-point season but leaving behind a divided dressing room.

Casillas was central to that tension. He went from club captain and automatic starter to a symbol of the internal conflict that followed Mourinho’s final months in charge.

Jose Mourinho links come from Real Madrid unrest

The reason Mourinho is back in the conversation is not nostalgia alone. Reports have linked him with Real Madrid because the club is searching for control after another difficult season and growing questions around the current project.

Mourinho is currently at Benfica, but his name has resurfaced because Perez has long valued managers who can impose authority quickly. That is the part of the argument that makes his return plausible.

Real Madrid’s reported interest is tied to discipline, dressing-room management, and the belief that a strong personality may be needed to reset the team. Mourinho still represents that kind of coach.

But Casillas’ objection points to the risk. Mourinho’s first spell brought trophies, intensity, and edge, but it also brought conflict that damaged relationships inside the club.

That is why his possible return feels so divisive. Supporters of the idea see a proven winner who can restore order.

Critics see a coach whose methods may no longer fit the club Real Madrid should be trying to build. Casillas clearly belongs in that second group.
