Great Soccer Legends Who Never Played in a World Cup

May is the month when teams in the 2026 FIFA World Cup will announce their selected squads. While most of the world’s top players will participate, some notable talents may be absent. Throughout history, several of soccer’s greatest players never had the opportunity to compete in a FIFA World Cup. This often stems from their national teams’ inability to qualify or from injuries preventing them from participation. Here are some of the sport’s legends who never graced the World Cup stage.

George Best

Regarded by many as one of soccer’s finest, George Best never made it to a World Cup. With Manchester United, he illuminated club and European football with his exceptional skills. Unfortunately, his national team never achieved the qualification needed to reach the finals, despite his immense talent. Best never played in the World Cup finals.

Di Stefano

Alfredo Di Stefano was a remarkable attacking midfielder and one of the standout players in European Cup history. He shone in the dominant Real Madrid teams of the 1950s, scoring 216 goals for the club and ranking among La Liga’s top scorers. However, at the international level, Di Stefano never participated in the FIFA World Cup with Argentina, as the team did not compete in the earlier tournaments and subsequently failed to qualify for the 1958 World Cup.

George Weah

George Weah had an illustrious club career, especially with AC Milan, where he helped secure two Serie A titles and scored 60 goals for the club. He also topped the scoring charts in the UEFA Champions League and received accolades as the European and World Player of the Year. Despite his achievements, Weah never experienced a FIFA World Cup, as Liberia was unable to qualify during his playing years.
