Cristiano Ronaldo’s Motivation Centers on Improvement, Not Material Gains

In a recent interview with Antena 1, Portugal’s national team coach Roberto Martinez emphasized that Cristiano Ronaldo’s drive extends beyond financial incentives and personal accolades.

“Cristiano does not play for money, he does not play for titles, he plays to improve. And that is incredible,” Martinez stated.

He further noted, “Cristiano Ronaldo can win the Champions League, the Golden Shoe, and the day after, Cristiano tries to improve.”

This perspective highlights why Martinez still perceives Ronaldo in a distinct light compared to other athletes, even as he progresses in his career.

Ronaldo has achieved nearly everything in football, from club competitions to international honors. He boasts numerous individual awards, a storied Champions League legacy, and the status of a global sports icon.

However, Martinez pointed out that Ronaldo’s mentality remains undiminished. The focus has shifted from merely collecting medals to demonstrating his ability to elevate his performance.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Ambition Fuels Portugal’s Quest for 2026 World Cup

Martinez linked this mindset to Ronaldo’s remarkable tenure with the national team, particularly as Portugal prepares for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

“It is unique to have a journey of 22 years for the National Team; the number of games he is playing, there is no other player. It is the hunger,” he explained.

“We can measure everything from a player, but it is an aspect that is not possible,” Martinez concluded.

That “hunger” is a crucial element. While Martinez can quantify goals, appearances, and statistics, he perceives Ronaldo’s relentless desire as something harder to measure.

This insatiable ambition is also why Ronaldo remains central to Portugal’s strategic discussions. His responsibilities on the field may adapt, but his dedication continues to earn Martinez’s trust.

As Ronaldo approaches another World Cup cycle, questions about his motivation arise. Having secured ample success and accolades, he could easily step away from the game. Yet, Martinez’s remarks clarify why Ronaldo remains committed. His quest for self-improvement appears to be the underlying reason for his ongoing presence in Portugal’s plans.
