Colorado Rapids Aim for Consistency as They Face Real Salt Lake

After a tactical change for one match, the Colorado Rapids plan to revert to their usual formation as they prepare to take on Real Salt Lake on Saturday in Sandy, Utah.

The Rapids made a strategic adjustment in their recent 1-0 victory against Minnesota United on Wednesday, utilizing a 5-3-2 formation with a 4-2-2-2 setup in attack. This win marked their first triumph since a 6-2 defeat of the Houston Dynamo on April 11, breaking a five-match winless streak (0-4-1) in league play.

Rafael Navarro’s team-leading eighth goal, assisted by Paxten Aaronson in the 26th minute, clinched the victory for Colorado, which now holds a record of 5-7-1, totaling 16 points.

The tactical shift allowed defenders Jackson Travis and Miguel Navarro to both see playing time on the field, a decision Coach Matt Wells had been contemplating. “Both those guys have a mentality that mirrors me,” Wells remarked. “They are both very adventurous, positive; they radiate the right energy.”

Injury returns also played a crucial role as Connor Ronan, Wayne Frederick, and Travis made their comebacks against Minnesota. Despite the potential return to a more traditional formation in the first leg of the Rocky Mountain Cup, the annual trophy competition against Salt Lake, Wells insists that maintaining the right mentality is essential for success. “On Saturday, maybe when the system changes back and the football reappears, it’s not what will win us the game,” he said. “It’s a combination of the football plus the (right) mentality.”

Real Salt Lake enters the rivalry matchup with short rest after securing a 3-0 home victory against the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday. Salt Lake (7-4-1, 22 points) capitalized on a first-half own goal, with Zavier Gozo netting two goals in the second half. RSL Coach Pablo Mastroeni emphasized the importance of attitude over strategy in preparation for the match. “We can talk about structure all we want,” he stated. “But structure doesn’t win you games. It’s about the mentality, with the structure, with the commitment and with making plays.”

Leading RSL are Sergi Solans with five goals and two assists, and Gozo, who has five goals and four assists this season. Historically, Salt Lake has a 14-7 advantage in head-to-head matchups; however, the Rapids have won the Rocky Mountain Cup for the past two seasons. “We have an unbelievable week coming up,” Wells noted. “A game against our rivals, away from home, with a chance to build even more momentum.”
