With just months to go before the World Cup begins, organizers are grappling with concerns surrounding the Estadio Azteca, which is set to host the tournament’s opening match along with several other fixtures. Reports have emerged indicating alarming issues regarding the stadium’s structural integrity.

Incidents of falling debris surfaced shortly after recent renovations. According to The Sun, during a Liga MX match between Club América and Pumas UNAM, chunks of concrete fell onto fans in attendance, raising significant safety alarms.

While initial inspections did not uncover immediate hazards, experts have expressed concerns about the stadium’s ongoing subsidence. This issue is attributed to the unique geology of Mexico City, which sits atop a former dried-up lake, causing the ground to gradually sink under constant weight. The city is noted as one of the fastest-sinking urban areas globally.

While stadium officials have not provided comprehensive statements, World Cup organizers maintain that all necessary work will be completed on time, ensuring the arena is fully prepared for the tournament’s commencement. The storied stadium had recently reopened after extensive renovations, marked by a friendly match between Mexico and Portugal, which culminated in a goalless draw.
