Tottenham’s Mason Melia Receives First Republic of Ireland Call-Up
Mason Melia is on track to receive his first call-up to the Republic of Ireland senior squad this month, according to Football London. Head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson confirmed that the 18-year-old will be included in the squad for friendlies against Qatar on May 28 and Canada on June 5, marking a significant achievement for a player who has yet to make his Tottenham debut.
This accomplishment is particularly remarkable considering the circumstances surrounding Melia’s arrival at Hotspur Way. The young talent joined from St Patrick’s Athletic in January for an initial £1.6 million, a record transfer fee for the League of Ireland, with potential add-ons that could double the total value. Tottenham acted swiftly to secure Melia against substantial interest from numerous Premier League and European clubs, signing him to a long-term contract lasting until 2031, highlighting the club’s view of his long-term potential.
Melia’s Progress Delayed by Injury
Melia’s journey to a first-team debut faced delays due to a back injury sustained shortly after his arrival, followed by a chest infection, which pushed back his Under-21 debut until last month. Despite these hurdles, he has garnered attention from Roberto De Zerbi, training with the first team occasionally and scoring goals at Under-21 level since recovering.
Hallgrimsson offered insights regarding his selection process. “Mason is in the next camp. I have to be honest, I haven’t seen him play for Tottenham’s U21s in their last games, but our U21s manager Jim Crawford has.” The fact that Crawford’s recommendation led to Melia’s senior call-up, despite Hallgrimsson not having seen him recently, underscores the impression the young athlete has made within the Irish football setup.
