Ethan Wheatley Returns to Manchester United After Bradford Loan
Manchester United’s academy continues to send young players out across the English pyramid. United are using loan spells to build experience for several prospects before deciding on their long-term future. One of those young forwards has now completed another temporary chapter away from Old Trafford after confirmation arrived following the end of the domestic campaign.
Ethan Wheatley returns
Ethan Wheatley has officially returned to Manchester United after his loan spell with Bradford City came to an end, as announced on their website.
The League One side confirmed their retained list after the conclusion of the 2025/26 season and included the United striker among the players departing Valley Parade this summer. In their official statement, Bradford said: “The club would like to take this opportunity to thank all departing players for their efforts while at Bradford City AFC, and wish them the very best for the future.”
Wheatley’s return closes what has been another important season in the development of one of Manchester United’s young attacking prospects, with the striker spending the second half of the campaign with Bradford after joining them in February. The teenager made 37 appearances across all competitions for the Bantams, scoring 3 goals and providing 4 assists during a season that gave him regular senior minutes in a demanding League One environment.
Before arriving at Bradford, Ethan Wheatley had already experienced a disrupted season away from Old Trafford. He spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Northampton Town, but that spell was cut short before United sanctioned the move to Bradford. That came after an earlier temporary move to Walsall in January 2025, meaning the forward has now represented three different clubs on loan in a relatively short period. One of the milestones of his journey came during his Northampton stint, where he scored his first professional goal in senior football against Exeter City.
Ethan Wheatley remains highly regarded within the United academy setup and has already been involved with first-team squads in recent seasons, with many expecting him to continue progressing through the club’s development pathway.
After Bradford’s campaign ended, the striker now returns to Carrington with his next step still to be decided. With Michael Carrick now leading plans for next season, pre-season could offer Wheatley a chance to impress again before another decision is made over whether he stays with the first-team group, features for the under-21s, or heads out on loan once more.
