Arsenal Moves Closer to Premier League Title with Victory Over Burnley

  • Kai Havertz’s first-half header secured a tense 1-0 win for Arsenal over Burnley,

  • This win puts the Gunners on the brink of their first Premier League title in 22 years.

  • The victory moves Arsenal five points clear at the top, leaving them just one win away from the trophy.

Arsenal is now on the verge of clinching its first Premier League title in 22 years after a narrow 1-0 victory over Burnley on Monday in what was their penultimate game of the season. The match was decided by Kai Havertz’s first-half header.

The win places Arsenal five points ahead at the top of the table, meaning that second-placed Manchester City must defeat Bournemouth on Tuesday to keep their title hopes alive. However, Arsenal will be crowned champions if they secure a win against Crystal Palace away this coming Sunday.

If successful, it would mark Arsenal’s first league title since 2004, a season where they notably went unbeaten under former manager Arsene Wenger.

Manager Mikel Arteta is on the brink of delivering an exceptional season for the club, with Arsenal also set to face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final on May 30.

“It’s been an amazing season so far. We’ve got one big one left here (in the league) and then the Champions League final,” Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard expressed in an on-field interview at the Emirates. “Just a little bit to go now and we’re going to give it all. We have to keep going.”

The decisive goal against Burnley, a team already relegated, came from a corner—one of the many crucial opportunities Arsenal has capitalized on this season. Havertz elevated to head in the set piece delivered by Bukayo Saka in the 37th minute.

This was just Havertz’s second league goal of a season plagued by injuries, but he earned a starting position up front with Arteta opting for him over Viktor Gyökeres.

“I had a feeling that he had to start,” Arteta commented. “The way they set up, I think he could be really difficult to handle. And he’s shown that.”

Despite a potentially contentious moment, Havertz avoided a red card when he received only a yellow in the 67th minute for a studs-up challenge on Lesley Ugochukwu, a decision confirmed by VAR review.

While Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya faced no significant challenges against Burnley’s lackluster offense, the Gunners never fully relaxed with the single-goal lead, as they failed to add a second score.

Nevertheless, they held firm through nearly 10 minutes of added time, taking another crucial step toward ending their lengthy title drought.

“There is one to go unless something beautiful happens tomorrow night,” Arteta remarked, adding that he will be “the biggest ever” Bournemouth fan during their match against Manchester City.
