Manchester United is reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney, who has previous ties with Michael Carrick.
In a recent column for The Athletic, United correspondent Laurie Whitwell identified 11 midfielders that the club could target this summer.
This list features notable names like Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, and Aurelien Tchouameni, in addition to Ederson and Bournemouth players Alex Scott and Tyler Adams.
However, Whitwell also highlighted some lesser-known options, particularly Hackney, who has emerged as a potential target for United.
Man United Could Reunite Michael Carrick with Hayden Hackney
According to the source, Hackney is viewed as a midfielder with “huge potential,” and he is favored by United directors, as well as Carrick, who coached him at Middlesbrough.
The England U21 international, a product of the Boro academy, has been with the club’s first team since returning from a loan spell at Scunthorpe.
Although he primarily plays as a central midfielder, Whitwell notes that the 23-year-old often drifts wide to either flank.
Transfermarkt estimates Hackney’s value at €28 million, or £24 million. However, with just a year remaining on his contract, Middlesbrough may consider parting with him for a lower fee to avoid losing him for free in 2027.
Thus, Saturday’s Championship playoff final against Hull City at Wembley could be Hackney’s last appearance for his lifelong club, irrespective of the outcome.
Why Hackney Could Be the Right Fit for Man Utd
While the Redcar native may not be Manchester United’s marquee signing in midfield, the club might need three new additions to the department, especially if they manage to offload Manuel Ugarte.
United cannot afford to spend significant transfer fees on three separate players in the same position, especially when some targets are priced at £100 million or higher. Thus, Hackney offers a cost-efficient option to bolster the midfield.
| Hackney’s Career Stats | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
| Middlesbrough | 153 | 16 | 17 |
| Scunthorpe | 31 | 0 | 2 |
The 23-year-old may require some time to adjust to the top flight, but his prior relationship with Carrick and Jonathan Woodgate could ease his transition.
