Miguel Cardoso has revealed his involvement in the controversial VAR incident during the Caf Champions League first leg final at Loftus Versveld yesterday, where Mamelodi Sundowns hosted ASFAR.
The situation took a dramatic turn shortly after the half-time break, as referee Jean-Jacques Ndala informed both team captains that the VAR technology had gone offline. This announcement led to objections from the Moroccan side, who refused to continue the match without the VAR system in place.
The standoff lasted approximately 20 minutes, eventually leading to the visitors agreeing to play the match without VAR assistance. Coach Cardoso played a crucial role in persuading his counterpart, Alexandre Santos, to proceed with the game.
Post-match, Cardoso expressed his satisfaction with the sportsmanship displayed by all parties, stating, “We need to give a good example to the world after what happened in the AFCON… even without VAR let’s go, and I think it was very beautiful to see how everybody understood each other.”
