Thomas Tuchel to Announce England Squad for 2026 FIFA World Cup

Thomas Tuchel will reveal his 26-man England squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup later today. It is anticipated that several Manchester City players will be featured in the squad. Among those expected to join Tuchel’s team are John Stones, Nico O’Reilly, and Marc Guehi. However, a major point of speculation for City has been whether Phil Foden would be included in the World Cup roster. A new report from the BBC suggests that Foden will not make the final selection, which is disappointing news for the young player. Still, an extended break may prove beneficial for Foden and Manchester City, allowing him to enter the 2026-27 season fit, refreshed, and prepared for the challenges ahead.

Phil Foden Will Miss Out on Selection in England’s World Cup Squad

The BBC has reported that Phil Foden is set to be excluded from the England squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Despite this news, it is expected that John Stones and Marc Guehi will participate in the tournament, which will take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Additionally, it would be surprising if Nico O’Reilly does not make the World Cup selection.

Though Phil Foden may feel disappointed about missing the World Cup, a prolonged summer break might be the best option for both him and Manchester City.

There’s no denying that Foden would have hoped to represent his country on such a grand stage, as the World Cup represents a pinnacle in a player’s career. Unfortunately, it seems he will not have that opportunity. While the situation may be disheartening for Foden, taking an extended break could be advantageous for him and Manchester City.

Phil Foden began the 2025-26 season strongly, but his performance waned in the latter half of the year. This decline put his place in the England squad at risk. Despite showing signs of improvement late in the season, it ultimately was not enough to secure his spot. Now, Foden will have the chance for a summer rest, marking arguably the first time in his career he can focus on recovery.

From Manchester City’s perspective, this break allows Foden to prepare for a full pre-season, which may be crucial for the team as they seek a rejuvenated player for the upcoming season. Although it is not ideal for Foden to miss the England squad for the World Cup, it could benefit Manchester City in the long run.

With Foden likely out of the England World Cup squad, he faces significant disappointment. However, this extended time away from football could help him return to Manchester City revitalized and eager to showcase his talent once more next season.
