Inter Milan Withdraws from Guglielmo Vicario Transfer Talks
Serie A giants Inter Milan were in advanced discussions to acquire Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who aimed to leave N17 this off-season following a tumultuous period at Hotspur Way.
Vicario’s Move to Inter Near Completion
Negotiations appeared to be progressing well, with a personal agreement already reached between Vicario and Inter. The former Empoli goalkeeper was eager about the potential transfer. However, Tottenham’s demands proved to be a significant hurdle, halting the transfer process.
According to reports from TuttoSport and Gazzetta dello Sport, as relayed by Sportwitness, Inter has now decided to withdraw from pursuing Vicario. The Italian champions have shifted their focus to Josep Martinez as their first-choice goalkeeper for the upcoming season, effectively ending months of speculation linking Vicario as a potential successor to Yann Sommer at San Siro.
Inter’s sporting director, Piero Ausilio, even traveled to London for discussions with the 29-year-old’s agent, reaching advanced stages in negotiations. However, these talks ultimately did not yield a deal.
Reports indicate that manager Cristian Chivu is confident in Martinez’s ability to fill the number one spot next season, which has diminished the urgency surrounding Vicario’s transfer.
Inter initially spent €14m to sign Martinez from Genoa two years ago and are reluctant to incur further costs by pursuing Vicario. The club believes it cannot offer more than €20m for the goalkeeper, while Vicario views this figure as insufficient, leading to the collapse of negotiations.
What Lies Ahead for Vicario?
Vicario’s agent, Gabriele Giuffrida, has a strong network within Serie A and is well-placed to find another potential buyer for the 29-year-old, should he still desire a summer exit.
Juventus is on the lookout for a starting goalkeeper to replace Mattia Perin, while Fiorentina may also need to fill a gap in their goalkeeping lineup amid the anticipated departure of David De Gea this transfer window. Additionally, AS Roma could be another option if Mile Svilar leaves during the summer.
