Pep Guardiola Leaves Manchester City as Enzo Maresca Awaits Confirmation

Pep Guardiola’s departure from his role as Manchester City manager was officially confirmed yesterday. Fabrizio Romano reported that Enzo Maresca is expected to be announced as the next City manager soon. Once he takes the helm, the Italian manager will promptly begin to shape his squad as well as preseason plans for the upcoming 2026-27 season. Among the players Maresca is reportedly targeting is Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, indicating that the new City manager is looking to acquire someone familiar with his previous work.

Enzo Maresca Eager to Bring Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City

Reports from Florian Plettenberg and Lucas Sixtus at Sky Sports Germany indicate that Enzo Maresca has a strong desire to sign Enzo Fernandez. Their close and trusting relationship developed during Maresca’s tenure as Chelsea manager. The World Cup-winning midfielder ranks as a top transfer target for City ahead of the summer window.

According to Miguel Delaney from The Independent, Enzo Fernandez is likely to leave Chelsea this summer, with Real Madrid also planning to make an approach for the midfielder. Delaney adds that Manchester City is interested in acquiring Fernandez but may only pursue him if Rodri exits the club this summer. Real Madrid is reportedly keen on signing Rodri as well. Delaney emphasizes the ongoing strong relationship between Maresca and Fernandez, noting that they have maintained close contact since Maresca’s departure from Chelsea earlier in the season.

Enzo Fernandez Could Enhance City’s Midfield Quality

The Manchester City midfield is set for significant changes next season, especially since captain Bernardo Silva will depart at the end of this season. Mateo Kovacic’s future is also uncertain, and the roles of Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders remain in question. Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson is anticipated to join City this summer, promising to bring tenacity and technical quality. Any potential move for Enzo Fernandez would be independent of Anderson’s signing.

Maresca appears keen to have Enzo Fernandez join Manchester City, especially considering the midfielder’s impressive statistics. This past season, Fernandez netted 15 goals and registered 7 assists in 53 appearances for Chelsea. Last season saw him contribute 9 goals and 17 assists in the same number of matches. Fernandez’s arrival would infuse goals and creativity into City’s midfield, complementing the existing squad.

Aside from his strong bond with Enzo Maresca, Enzo Fernandez brings a notable edge to midfield play. City needs such qualities in light of the evolving demands of the Premier League. The Argentinian midfielder is known for his tenacity in challenges and his ability to read the game effectively when opponents have possession. Furthermore, Fernandez excels at facilitating the play, adeptly locating wingers from midfield. Given City’s roster, which includes talents like Jeremy Doku, Antoine Semenyo, Rayan Cherki, and Phil Foden, Fernandez’s playing style could integrate seamlessly with the squad.
