Aston Villa secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Freiburg in the UEFA Europa League final, but the match was marred by an unexpected injury to the Birmingham side’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez.

Martínez revealed that he fractured a finger on his hand shortly before the match commenced, marking the first time in his career he has sustained such an injury. The Argentine goalkeeper shared his experience, stating, “Today I broke my finger during the warm-up! But for me, every bad thing brings something good. I’ve done this my whole life and I’ll keep doing it. I had never broken a finger before. Every time I caught the ball, it bent the other way. But these are the things you have to go through, and I’m proud to defend Aston Villa.”

This victory is significant for Aston Villa, as it marks the club’s first UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup title in its history. For their manager, this triumph represents a fifth title in the competition, having previously lifted the trophy three times with Sevilla and once with Villarreal.
