Bruno Fernandes Aims for Premier League Assists Record as Season Successes Pile Up
Bruno Fernandes has excelled this season for Manchester United, reinforcing his position as one of the club’s shining modern lights.
The Portuguese international, who has led by example as captain, is on the verge of history with the opportunity to set a new Premier League assists record against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.
Even without this, Fernandes’ performances this season have already garnered recognition, as he received the Player of the Year award from Manchester United and was also honored with the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year award.
On Saturday, he was named Player of the Season by the Premier League, outperforming Declan Rice, even though the Arsenal midfielder won the league.
With this award, Bruno Fernandes joins Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo in an exclusive club.
He is now one of just six United players to win the Premier League’s Player of the Season award.
Previously, Ronaldo (2006-07, 2007-08), Nemanja Vidić (2008-09 and 2010-11), Wayne Rooney (2009-10), Dwight Yorke (1998-99), Peter Schmeichel (1995-96), and Ruud van Nistelrooy (2002-03) have all claimed this honor while representing the Red Devils.
Fernandes is the first United player in 15 years to win the Premier League’s top individual prize, even as the team finishes third in the English top flight this season.
The Portuguese international has already established his place amongst Manchester United folklore, joining renowned figures such as Ronaldo, Rooney, and Schmeichel.
It remains to be seen how successful the midfielder will be in the coming years, but he still has other trophies to pursue.
The Premier League is one of these, and he is likely to lead the side as captain in their quest for the title next season.
