Tottenham Faces Rebuild Effort After Narrowly Avoiding Relegation
Tottenham Hotspur narrowly escaped relegation to the Championship, securing a 1-0 victory over Everton on the final day of the season.
A goal from Joao Palhinha just before halftime ensured three crucial points for the North London club, finishing two points clear of West Ham, who, along with Burnley and Wolves, will play in the Championship next season. This marks back-to-back seasons finishing in 17th place for Spurs, a disappointing outcome amid their biggest rivals, Arsenal, claiming the Premier League title.
Roberto De Zerbi, appointed as the permanent head coach in late March, aimed to keep the team in the Premier League. This objective was met, and De Zerbi expressed gratitude to his players on the season’s final day. He is now shifting his focus towards planning for the upcoming 2026/27 season.
De Zerbi Outlines Transfer Needs Following Survival
In reflecting on the win against Everton, De Zerbi assessed Tottenham’s current squad and outlined his requirements to avoid a repeat of this season’s struggles. He indicated that while not many players need to be changed, the club must bring in some quality “first-level players” to strengthen the team.
“Next season, we have to build a top, top, top team. We don’t have to change too many players in our squad but we have to bring in some first-level players,” De Zerbi stated in an interview with Sky Sports (h/t BBC Sport).
The manager is committed to ensuring that the club does not find itself in a similar predicament again. After spending much of the latter half of the season near the bottom of the table, he is clearly communicating his needs to the board and recruitment team as the summer transfer window approaches.
The Hotspur Way leadership must secure “first-level” signings capable of transforming the squad back into a competitive unit. They should not forget their recent European success in Bilbao and need to begin working diligently to acquire the players De Zerbi has requested.
Without effective recruitment planning and execution, another difficult season may be on the horizon. Therefore, it is crucial to bring in quality players as soon as the summer transfer window opens.
