Tottenham Secures Premier League Status with Final Day Victory

Tottenham Hotspur ensured their place in the Premier League on the season’s final day, clinching a vital 1-0 win against Everton.

The turnaround was orchestrated by Roberto De Zerbi, who assumed the managerial role in late March. Prior to his arrival, Spurs had managed just seven victories from their first 31 matches. Under De Zerbi’s guidance, the team achieved three wins, two draws, and two losses in their final seven games, successfully avoiding relegation.

West Ham also fought for survival, defeating Leeds United 3-0. However, their hopes faded as Tottenham triumphed, condemning the Hammers to the Championship alongside Burnley and Wolves for the 2026-27 season. Sunday’s win marked Tottenham’s first home victory in the Premier League since December when they defeated Brentford 2-0. Remarkably, it was only their third home win of the season, a record that ties with Hull City in 2008-09 for the fewest wins at home by a team that avoided relegation.

Micky van de Ven Voices Frustration Following Narrow Escape

Despite the dramatic survival under De Zerbi, Micky van de Ven articulated his deep frustration with Tottenham’s dismal season. The central defender labeled their domestic campaign as “unacceptable” and “embarrassing,” especially given the talent within the squad.

“It is unacceptable that the last game we played this season we play for relegation. This club has some unbelievable players. It was embarrassing to let it come to the final day, but we did it, and that is what is important,” Van de Ven stated on BBC MOTD (h/t BBC Sport).

“To be honest, I was more emotional at the end of the final whistle, it has been a tough season for me personally as well. I played almost every game, and I have suffered a lot. The emotions are really happy, and we must not let it happen again.”

De Zerbi Focuses on Retaining Van de Ven

Following Sunday’s match, De Zerbi has made clear his intentions regarding the transfer window, particularly concerning Van de Ven. The Netherlands international, praised as the best centre-back in the Premier League by the Spurs manager, experienced a challenging season but ended on a high note, stepping in as captain during Cristian Romero’s injury absence and playing a crucial role in the club’s late push for safety.

Van de Ven scored seven goals and recorded an assist in 45 matches across all competitions. He appeared to find his form toward the end of the season, which was pivotal during the relegation battle.

The centre-back is expected to attract interest in the upcoming summer transfer window, thanks to his blend of technical skill, athleticism, and leadership. De Zerbi hopes to keep Van de Ven at Tottenham, potentially grooming him to take over as captain following Romero’s impending departure.
