Major League Soccer Plans Calendar Shift to Align with Global Football Standards

The move is one of the biggest structural changes in MLS history. Starting in 2027, the league will transition from its traditional spring-to-fall schedule into a summer-to-spring format.

That shift is meant to put MLS closer to the rhythm fans already follow in Europe and the wider football world.

Don Garber Wants Major League Soccer to Join the Global Football Conversation

Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Garber explained that the calendar change is tied to how American soccer fans already consume the sport.

“We want to be a part of the global soccer conversation. When they say the global football conversation, lots of people love international soccer; they love teams from Europe.

“We want them to be engaged and love their local MLS team,” Garber said.

That is the central reason for the shift. MLS does not want to exist on a separate island while the biggest clubs, transfer windows, and international debates move on a different calendar.

The new plan will begin with a transition season in early 2027, followed by the full summer-to-spring format from mid-to-late July 2027 through May 2028.

There will also be a winter break from mid-December into early February, which helps avoid the harshest weather stretch in colder MLS markets.

Garber Sees the 2026 World Cup as MLS’s Chance for Legacy

Garber also connected the calendar decision to the 2026 FIFA World Cup being hosted across North America.

“Obviously, with the World Cup here, we want that not to be a Taylor Swift concert. We don’t want it to be a flash in the pan,” he continued.

“We want it to actually create long-term legacy value where people remember something special,” Garber concluded.

That statement highlights the pressure on MLS. The World Cup will bring significant attention, but Garber wants the league to retain those new fans after the tournament ends.

It gives MLS clubs cleaner transfer timing, fewer conflicts with international windows, and a better chance to be judged alongside leagues that fans already watch every week.

The change also moves the MLS Cup Playoffs away from the busiest part of the American sports calendar and into a clearer spring window.
