Clint Dempsey Urges USMNT to Avoid Repeat of Copa America Disappointment

In a recent discussion on Up & Adams, Clint Dempsey expressed confidence that the United States men’s national team (USMNT) can make a deep run in the upcoming tournaments, while also highlighting the risks of potential failure.

“Getting to the quarterfinals or the semifinals would be awesome, but let’s talk about nightmare scenarios. When you think about Copa America in 2024, we were the first host country to not get out of the group [stage] ever,” Dempsey remarked.

He added, “That was terrible being two years away from the World Cup. Now, in the new World Cup setup, I think it’s more difficult to not get out of the group. All you need is one win and a good goal differential.”

This pressure point stems from the USMNT’s disappointing exit in the 2024 Copa America, where they failed to advance from a group that included Uruguay, Panama, and Bolivia, all while playing on home soil.

The format for the 2026 World Cup aims to make such failures less likely, with 12 groups of four teams, allowing the top two from each group and the eight best third-place teams to progress to a 32-team knockout round.

Dempsey Sets Quarterfinal Benchmark for USMNT

Dempsey remains optimistic, believing the team can achieve quarterfinal success if they navigate the group stage effectively.

“I think this team can get to the quarterfinals. I think that’s a realistic shout, and then who is to say they don’t go on from there and even go further?” he stated.

This assertion is rooted in the potential seen within the current squad, featuring talents like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams, Gio Reyna, and Folarin Balogun, who provide coach Mauricio Pochettino with solid building blocks.

Nonetheless, Dempsey’s caution keeps expectations in check. At a home World Cup, failing to advance from the group stage would not simply be disappointing; it could shake the foundations of the program.

For the USMNT, the path is clear: first, aim for the knockout stage, then set sights on the quarterfinals, ensuring that the 2024 Copa America remains a cautionary tale rather than a forecast of their future.
