Cristian Romero Sparks Debate Ahead of Tottenham’s Final Showdown Against Everton
Cristian Romero has consistently made headlines during his time with Tottenham Hotspur.
Reports surfaced last week indicating that Cristian Romero would miss Spurs’ relegation-deciding match against Everton at home on the final day of the season on Sunday, as he planned to return to Argentina to support his boyhood club Belgrano in their match against River Plate in the Argentina Primera Division Apertura final.
This news led the central defender to face criticism from various quarters, but Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi came to his defense. He stated that the decision for Romero to return to Argentina for rehabilitation, particularly as he is recovering from a knee injury and aiming to be fit for the World Cup, was made in agreement with the club’s medical staff.
Former Everton Executive Commends Cristian Romero’s Return for Key Match
Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness has weighed in on the controversy regarding Romero. He believes the defender made the correct choice by returning to England in time for Tottenham’s vital clash against Everton on the last day of the season.
“Given the jeopardy that Spurs faced, this story garnered significant attention. I heard it discussed frequently,” Wyness remarked on Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast.
“People were critical of Romero because they assumed he would be in Argentina watching River Plate. The reality was that he was actually on the touchline. He claims the story had no basis,” he added.
“We’ll need to see if that’s the case. Ultimately, the right decision was made. The captain has a responsibility, and he should be present for such a critical match. We’ll see what Romero does next season,” Wyness continued.
“In the end, the right actions were taken, and this story likely received more attention than it would have if it had merely been a mid-table clash at the season’s end. It was an essential game, and he was rightly there,” he concluded.
