As the 2026 World Cup approaches, England faces a challenge in selecting the right support for Harry Kane, who is expected to be the main striker.

Phil Foden played as a false nine in the recent match against Japan, but after a 1-0 loss where he had little impact, England is reconsidering their options.

Considering Kane’s injury history, the team may need to rely on one of the following five players. The question is, who best fits Thomas Tuchel’s style?

Ollie Watkins

This season has not been up to Ollie Watkins’ usual standard. He has scored nine goals in 30 Premier League games. While these numbers aren’t bad, he is capable of much more.

Watkins combines great movement and speed, making him a threat when he is at his best.

He notably scored the winning goal against The Netherlands in the Euro 2024 semi-finals, tallying six international goals in 20 appearances.

Anthony Gordon

Anthony Gordon is primarily a winger and not an instinctive striker. When played up front, he lacks the aerial ability and physical presence needed to hold the ball effectively.

Despite this, Gordon’s speed makes him dangerous when the ball is played into space. His effectiveness varies—he excels against teams that defend deeply but may struggle against high-press teams.

Danny Welbeck

At the start of the season, Danny Welbeck was not seen as a candidate for England. However, he has become a strong backup option.

Welbeck combines pace and power with excellent movement, enjoying a resurgence towards the end of his career.

He leads this group with 12 goals in 30 Premier League appearances so far this season.

Dominic Solanke

Dominic Solanke has struggled to make an impact since joining Tottenham in 2024. His goal scoring has been limited, and he has faced injuries.

Despite his potential to be a top striker, the former Bournemouth player has yet to showcase his full abilities with Tottenham.

While he deserves consideration for the England squad, he must prove he can be Kane’s primary backup both at club and international levels.

Ivan Toney

Ivan Toney was not selected for Tuchel’s latest England squad. However, given his impressive goal-scoring record, his absence raises questions.

He has netted 25 goals in 25 league matches this season, but playing in the Saudi Pro League may have affected his selection.

The overall quality of the Saudi Pro League is under scrutiny; Toney’s performances in a top European league would likely have secured him a place in the national team.
