Manchester City may be nearing an unexpected triumph this season. While Arsenal holds the lead for the Premier League title, City is still in contention.
A change in the team lineup seems likely, given the size of City’s squad. Here are five players who might leave Manchester City in the upcoming summer transfer window, including a player with over 200 Premier League appearances for the club.
Nathan Ake
Nathan Ake has had a lengthy tenure at City, but his impact has been limited. The Dutch international can play as a left-back or centre-back but has not consistently been a first-team regular under Pep Guardiola.
Ake falls short in both positions; he lacks the speed to be a natural left-back and does not possess the positioning skills of a top centre-half. With his contract ending in summer 2027 and only one year remaining, City may look to sell him now.
John Stones
Once regarded as a leading centre-back, John Stones has faced numerous injuries that have affected his performance. Now 31, his current contract will expire this summer.
City has not indicated plans to renew Stones’ contract. If nothing changes, he will become a free agent on July 1.
Mateo Kovacic
Mateo Kovacic’s injury history may hinder his chances of staying at Manchester City. At 31, the club could consider moving him on this summer.
Earlier this season, several clubs, including AC Milan, West Ham, Aston Villa, Villarreal, and Real Betis, showed interest. However, none could proceed in January due to his injury. If he stays fit, it’s likely at least one of these teams will revisit their interest. Kovacic’s contract also runs until 2027, making a transfer a possibility for City.
Rodri
Once considered among the best players, Rodri’s performance has declined since a significant injury in 2024. Although Pep Guardiola wants him to stay at the club, Rodri has expressed interest in moving to Real Madrid.
His future remains uncertain. With his contract expiring in 2027, City may need to sell him if they cannot finalize a new deal.
Phil Foden
Phil Foden’s potential exit may come as a surprise. He has been with the club since 2004 and debuted in 2016. However, like others on this list, his contract ends in summer 2027. Reports in March suggested that contract discussions took place, but City was not prepared to increase his salary.
The England international has faced challenges securing first-team opportunities this season. A fresh start could be beneficial for his career.
