Florian Wirtz has shown great progress since joining Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen.
The German midfielder was signed for £116 million, which came with high expectations.
While there was some early media criticism, Wirtz’s recent performances are changing that perception.
Wirtz and Ekitike have collaborated for six goals this season, including a recent assist in the win against Newcastle United.
As they prepare for Manchester City, manager Arne Slot hopes both players can perform well again this Sunday.

The Liverpool manager spoke to the media ahead of the match against City, discussing various topics.
He mentioned Jeremy Jacquet, who is set to join from Newcastle United later this month.
Slot also shared his thoughts on Wirtz, mentioning that while his technical ability hasn’t changed much, that wasn’t necessary. The real focus has been on other areas.
The manager said: “You need to give credit to Wirtz for his hard work on the pitch and in the gym. When a player struggles physically, it’s important to keep them involved to improve. Wirtz showed that determination.
“He might not have improved much technically, as he has always been talented, but his off-the-ball connections with teammates have grown. That improvement is key for being ready for the Premier League.”
Florian Wirtz’s Previous Performance Against Manchester City
Wirtz initially took time to adjust in England and was not at his best when Liverpool faced Manchester City at the Etihad earlier in the 2025/26 season.
City won that match 3-0, with Wirtz starting on the left wing.
He finished that game with a 0.09 expected assists and did not make any key passes, which contrasts with his recent contributions.
The versatile midfielder did not manage a shot on goal and completed just one dribble during that match.
However, based on his recent performances, a different Wirtz is expected this time around.
