• Atletico Madrid reached the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League 2025-26

  • They defeated Club Brugge 7-4 on aggregate

  • Alexander Sorloth scored a hat-trick

Alexander Sorloth scored a hat-trick as Atletico Madrid secured their spot in the last 16 of the Champions League with a 4-1 victory over Club Brugge in the second leg of their playoff.

Sorloth scored both the first and last goals at Estadio Metropolitano on Tuesday, helping Diego Simeone’s team win the matchup 7-4 on aggregate.

After a fast-paced start, Atletico took the lead in the 23rd minute. Sorloth received a long pass from Jan Oblak, fending off Brandon Mechele before firing a left-footed shot that slipped past Simon Mignolet.

Brugge equalized in the 36th minute when Joel Ordonez scored with a header at the back post after Mechele redirected Christos Tzolis’ corner.

The visitors nearly took the lead just after, but Hugo Vetlesen’s close-range header was brilliantly saved by Oblak.

This vital save allowed Atletico to regain the lead three minutes into the second half when Johnny Cardoso’s half-volley found the bottom-left corner.

Brugge struggled to generate further chances, and their exit from the competition was nearly confirmed in the 76th minute. Ademola Lookman’s deflected pass reached Sorloth, who finished from close range.

There was still time for Sorloth to score his third goal. He volleyed Matteo Ruggeri’s delivery into the net in the 87th minute.
