Austin FC aims for their third consecutive match with points when they visit Charlotte for their first away game of the MLS season on Saturday.

Austin (1-0-1, 4 points) started the season with a 2-2 draw against Minnesota and secured a win against D.C. United last weekend.

Coach Nico Estevez emphasizes the importance of small details early in the season.

“Right now, everyone is motivated and excited for the season,” Estevez said. “We’re realizing how tough it is to earn wins. Some teams haven’t come in with the right mindset; games are decided by small details.”

Forward Christian Ramirez scored the only goal in the win over D.C. United, and Estevez expects a similar lineup in Charlotte.

“Charlotte’s strategy when playing in a mid to low block is like D.C. United’s approach, using a 4-4-2 formation. We need to improve in breaking them down,” he said. “However, since they are playing at home, they might be more open, which should play to our advantage in quick transitions.”

Charlotte FC (0-1-1, 1 point) drew with Austin in their home opener after losing 3-0 to the Galaxy in Los Angeles last Saturday.

Midfielder Pep Biel has scored Charlotte’s only goal in the season-opening 1-1 draw against St. Louis.

As Charlotte prepares for its first home match, coach Dean Smith is concentrating on strengthening their defense.

“We’ve faced issues in both games during transitions,” Smith noted. “Improving our defensive transition is crucial. I take responsibility for that and will work on it.”

This Saturday marks the first match between the two teams since their 2-2 draw in Austin on July 20, 2024.
