Robson joined United in October 1981 for a then-record fee of £1.5 million from West Brom, paid by former manager Ron Atkinson.
With his fearless tackling, goalscoring skills, and leadership, Robson quickly became a favorite at Old Trafford.
His notable achievements include the 1983 FA Cup final, the 1991 European Cup Winners’ Cup, and winning the first Premier League trophy, ending a 26-year title drought for United.
Having made 461 appearances, Robson is considered one of the club’s all-time greats. He recently shared memories from his playing days on the Inside Carrington podcast.
“You’re putting me on the spot now,” Robson said. “There have been many great players at United, but for longevity and success, I’d say Giggsy.”
Ryan Giggs, who joined Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad while Robson was still a key player, went on to achieve significant success, winning 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League titles.
Ryan Giggs remembers a classic prank by Bryan Robson
During his 23 years at United, Giggs became an essential player for Sir Alex Ferguson.
In an earlier episode of the UTD Podcast, he recounted how Robson played a clever prank on him early in his career.
“I got stitched up,” Giggs said.
“The first thing that comes to mind is the manager’s red face, staring at me and looking like he wanted to throw me out the window!
“I had told Bryan Robson, ‘Everyone else has a club car, and I’ve played 25 first-team games now.’
“He replied, ‘Yes, you should ask the manager about it,’ and I believed him since he never joked with me before.
“So I knocked on the manager’s door and said, ‘Listen, I’ve played 25 games now, can I have a club car?’ I could see his face change halfway through. When I mentioned the ‘club car’, his face turned red and he started swearing.
“He shouted, ‘Club car? You won’t even get a club bike. Get out of my office now, before I throw you out!’ As I opened the door, half the first team was outside listening, waiting for a reaction. You live and learn!”
