Wiki Carmona scored two goals against his former team as CF Montreal surprised the New York Red Bulls with a 3-0 victory on Sunday in Harrison, N.J.

Montreal had a tough start to the season, losing 8-0 combined in their first two matches against San Diego and Chicago.

The match against the Red Bulls, who won their first two games, seemed likely to be another challenge. However, Montreal took an early lead.

Ivan Jaime was fouled in the box by New York’s Justin Che, resulting in a penalty kick. Prince Owusu converted the penalty in the eighth minute, marking Montreal as the last MLS team to score this season.

New York quickly responded, with Emil Forsberg’s shot testing Montreal’s goalkeeper Thomas Gillier, who managed to deflect it wide.

In the 32nd minute, 17-year-old Julian Hall, who had three goals in New York’s previous matches, had a shot saved by Gillier.

Nine minutes later, Hall’s teammates nearly equalized when Adri Mehmeti’s header from a corner kick was deflected wide.

The Red Bulls had the upper hand in possession and sought to score before halftime, but Montreal struck back quickly.

In the 43rd minute, Carmona was fouled just outside the box by Jorge Ruvalcaba. He scored from the free kick with a low shot that tricked New York goalkeeper Ethan Horvath, putting Montreal ahead 2-0 at halftime despite New York controlling 67.1% of possession.

Carmona scored again due to a mistake by Horvath, who tried to pass out quickly. He lost the ball to Mehmeti, allowing Carmona to finish and extend Montreal’s lead to 3-0.

This was Montreal’s first clean sheet since a 1-0 win over New York City FC on June 28 last year, ending a run of 17 league matches without one.

Gillier made five saves for Montreal, while Horvath had one save for the Red Bulls.
