Since Michael Carrick took charge, he has included Harry Maguire in the starting lineup for all six of his Premier League matches, with the centre-back playing the full 90 minutes in five of those games.

The England international has been Carrick’s main choice alongside Lisandro Martinez, who is currently injured.

In a recent press conference, Carrick discussed Maguire’s future, saying, “Within the squad, there’s a balance. You want young talent and enthusiasm while also developing players.”

“You need experienced players at their peak, and that experience is invaluable.”

Michael Carrick discusses Harry Maguire’s form and experience

Maguire joined Manchester United in 2019 from Leicester City for a reported £80 million under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Over recent seasons, the defender has shown improved form at Old Trafford, and Carrick compared Maguire’s current situation to his own playing days.

“As your career progresses, you’re a young player starting fresh and fearless. Then you reach your peak years, have some ups and downs, and finally gain experience that should enhance your performance,” Carrick stated.

“Maguire’s recent performances demonstrate the value of experience. I found that my best years were around 31 or 32, where I could still perform physically while using my past experiences.”

Maguire, who lost the captaincy under Erik ten Hag in 2023, has still managed to win the FA Cup and League Cup with United since then.
