Real Madrid have done it again, they have defeated Atletico Madrid yet another time in the Champions league. Atletico Madrid will be heartbroken the way the penalty shootout decided the match.
The match that was played in the regulation time and extra time couldn’t be decided as it was an excellent display of football from both the teams and they could only be separated through penalty shootouts.
Conor Gallagher scored in the 27th second of the match
Atletico Madrid started the match with a furious pace as they scored in the 27th second of the match through Conor Gallagher. He might have been lucky after a deflection from Raul Asencio but they all count and Atletico were more than happy to take it.
Real Madrid did not understand what hit them but after the goal they started to play more on the ball and started to weave passes in and around Atletico’s half. After the goal, Atletico were happy to sit back and let the los blancos have the ball.
Real looked comfortable on the possession but was not able to penetrate their defense line as it was as solid as ever. Atletico Madrid looked dangerous whenever they got the ball during counter attacks but Courtois was up to it.
After the 70th minute mark, the game opened up and it became end to end as both teams started running up and down the pitch. Real Madrid looked like they would score in the latter parts of the match but were denied by the Atletico Fortress of Lenglet and Gimenez.
In the extra time, the game became more equal as Atletico made some substitutions and the fresh legs made a difference up on the pitch. The match was interesting but no real threats for the goalkeepers which meant the match going into penalties.
Julian Alvarez’s penalty was denied by VAR

The Penalties were the controversial part of the match as Julian Alvarez‘s penalty was denied with the help of VAR which suggested that he had a double touch on the ball meaning no goal. Due to this and a Marcos Llorente penalty straight onto the bar, Real Madrid won the tie 4-2 on penalties and have made it into the quarter finals of the Champions League.
