Neto and Chelsea’s coach later expressed regret for the incident.
Neto, a winger for Chelsea, apologized for pushing a PSG ball boy during the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match on Wednesday at Parc des Princes, where Chelsea lost 5-2.
This occurred after the ball went out of play in stoppage time when Neto attempted to grab it quickly. However, the ball boy held on to it.
Neto’s push caused the boy to fall back into the advertising boards.
The boy recovered quickly and seemed fine, receiving comfort from some PSG players. Others argued with Neto in response.
PSG players expressed their discontent with Neto’s actions, surrounding the referee in hopes of a penalty. Nevertheless, the referee did not take any action against Neto.
Neto later addressed the situation, stating, “I want to apologize for what happened on the pitch.” He mentioned having spoken with the ball boy and added, “With the emotions of the game, I wanted to pick up the ball and gave him a little push. I’m sorry for that.”
Neto also shared that he gave the boy his shirt, which pleased him. “He said sorry about 35 times,” Neto added.
Chelsea’s coach, Liam Rosenior, also offered an apology on behalf of the club. He stated he was aware of the altercation but had not seen the incident itself and expressed regret for any wrongdoing.
Rosenior said, “It’s on me. We have to manage these moments better.” He acknowledged that the incident was followed by PSG’s fifth goal in the match.
Regarding the team’s performance, Chelsea faces a significant challenge as they prepare for the second leg in London. They will need an extraordinary effort to avoid elimination from the European competition.
