Liverpool fans are still reacting to their unexpected defeat against relegation-threatened Wolves. Once again, left winger Cody Gakpo faced criticism for his lackluster performance in attack.
This season, the Reds need to improve their chances, and Florian Wirtz’s absence highlights how one-dimensional the team can be. Striker Hugo Ekitike has managed well in his first season at Anfield, especially given the struggles on the wing.
Gakpo is a skilled player with the ability to pass and cross effectively, and he is also decent athletically. However, his predictable style has made it easier for Premier League defenders to manage him.
When Gakpo joined Liverpool, his effective attacking runs were known, but it was clear he preferred to cut inside for early crosses and shots, functioning more like an inverted playmaker than a traditional winger.
Defenses are catching on to this pattern; while his fellow countryman Arjen Robben thrived on cutting inside, doing so requires exceptional speed and unpredictability—qualities that Gakpo currently lacks.
His slow movement when cutting inside to shoot, coupled with an unwillingness to cross with his left foot, limits his options and makes it easier for defenders.
Liverpool needs to explore using different players on the wing and allow Gakpo to play in positions that suit his style instead of forcing him into a winger role.
The left side of the attack is becoming a hindrance, further complicating matters for Mohamed Salah, who has not received much assistance from Gakpo.
