David de Gea has shared his thoughts on Michael Carrick’s time as manager at Manchester United, highlighting the club’s recent successes under him.
In an interview with TNT Sports after Fiorentina’s 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace in the Conference League, de Gea said, “He’s [Carrick] doing an amazing job; United is winning many games.”
“He’s doing fantastic work. He’s a good person and understands how the players feel, making it easy to communicate with him. He’s doing an outstanding job.”
“United are performing well and winning games. Hopefully, they can secure a Champions League spot and continue to improve.”
“I want to see United back in top positions and competing for trophies.”
During their time at Old Trafford, de Gea and Carrick played together 187 matches. The goalkeeper also worked with Carrick during his first interim role in 2021.
Last summer, de Gea returned to Old Trafford as Fiorentina faced United in a friendly, which ended in a 1-1 draw. This match was his first at the stadium since leaving after the 2022-23 season.
De Gea’s remarks indicate that he hopes for a Champions League return for Manchester United, which can be secured by finishing in the Premier League’s top five, following decent performances from English teams in Europe this season.
Currently, Carrick’s team holds a one-point advantage over Aston Villa in fourth place, six points ahead of Liverpool in fifth, and seven points clear of Chelsea in sixth with seven games left in the season.
Manchester United will face both Liverpool and Chelsea in these final matches, providing chances for Carrick’s side to increase their lead and confirm Champions League qualification.
Fiorentina is currently in 15th place in Serie A, making a rematch between the two teams in the Champions League unlikely. However, de Gea’s comments may serve as motivation for United as they aim for success in the season’s final stages.
