From November 2024 to January 2026, Diogo Dalot was a consistent part of the starting lineup under Ruben Amorim.

Dalot played 54 matches during Amorim’s time, with only Bruno Fernandes (58) featuring in more games.

Amorim frequently used Dalot as a wing-back, assigning him to both sides. While this versatility was beneficial, it also came with difficulties.

In his more defined role as a right-back now, Dalot has displayed improved performance. This was particularly clear in two key statistics from United’s recent match against Fulham.

Both metrics were season highs for him. In the 3-2 victory over Fulham, he completed more passes and more passes into the attack than in any other game this season.

This points to a possible flaw in Ruben Amorim’s system—Dalot achieved more final third passes as a full-back compared to when he was a wing-back.

A consistent lineup around him has also contributed to this improvement. Under Carrick, he has played all three matches with the same centre-backs and the same player ahead of him on right wing.

The combination of Dalot and Amad on their side looks promising. Although United conceded four goals in their last two matches, their overall defensive performance in these three games has shown signs of progress.

Dalot faces pressure for his spot

With Noussair Mazraoui returning from international duty with Morocco, Diogo Dalot now faces more competition for his position.

Despite the added pressure, Carrick has not rushed to make a change and continues to trust Dalot as a starter.

Ahead of the Arsenal match, Carrick publicly supported Dalot, commending his defensive work against City and addressing some of the criticism as unfair.

While Mazraoui is expected to play before the season ends, Dalot is doing everything he can to maintain his spot in the team.

This increased competition could be beneficial for United overall. In fact, Mazraoui’s return may have encouraged Dalot to perform at one of his best levels this season.
