A former Manchester United defender has been charged by the Football Association for alleged misconduct during a recent League Two match.
According to The Sun, the assistant manager of Salford City is accused of “acting in an improper manner and/or using abusive and/or insulting words and/or behavior towards a match official” after Salford City’s 3-2 loss to Cheltenham Town earlier this month. The match had late controversy, including a red card and a penalty decision, leading to Cheltenham’s comeback in stoppage time.
The coach in question is Alex Bruce, who spent part of his youth career in the Manchester United academy before being released at 16. He did not make a senior appearance for the club but had a professional career in the English Football League, making over 350 appearances for teams like Hull City, Ipswich Town, and Huddersfield Town.
After retiring from playing in 2022, he began coaching and joined the Salford staff in 2024.
Salford City is notably backed by members of the “Class of ’92,” including Gary Neville and David Beckham, adding further attention to the case given the club’s ties to Manchester United.
The club has also signed ex-United players and worked with past sponsors of the team. Alex Bruce is the son of Steve Bruce, a former Manchester United captain who won three Premier League titles and several other trophies at Old Trafford.
Alex’s father has previously mentioned he was considered for the Manchester United managerial position and spoke about receiving threats during a tough time managing Newcastle United.
Alex Bruce and the Salford City player charged with him have until March 2 to respond to the allegations from the FA.
