Marcus Rashford is currently on loan at Barcelona for the 2025/26 season, raising questions about his future with Manchester United.
Under Ruben Amorim, he has struggled to find favor, having spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa before moving to Spain this year.
He signed a contract that lasts until the summer of 2025.
As of now, the 28-year-old has registered 10 goals and 13 assists with the La Liga club.
With Michael Carrick now managing Manchester United, it’s unclear if Rashford has a chance to return to the first team at his original club.
Amorim discussed Rashford’s situation, stating, “The reason is the training, the way I see what footballers should do in training, in life, it’s every day, every detail.”
Rashford’s behavior during parts of his United career has raised concerns, with some fans believing that moving on from the academy graduate might be best.
Rod Thornley, who worked with United from 2001 to 2019, shared insights about Rashford’s demeanor and performance.
“I’ll say it, I don’t mind, I know Marcus, and if he’s not happy with what I say, I don’t care,” Thornley commented on The Busby Way Podcast.
“He became unhappy. He became a different person. I watched this player that used to be a happy, lovely kid just moping around, especially in the club.”
Thornley, a former masseuse at United, noted that Rashford’s lack of effort was evident on the field.
“Then it transferred onto the pitch, and then you see him walking around, and you just wanted energy levels out of him,” he explained.
“He’s getting energy levels out of the players, and you wanted that out of Marcus, but you just weren’t getting it.”
Thornley concluded that Rashford has not fully committed to his Manchester United career.
Rashford represents the ideal of what United stands for—a local boy achieving his dream and having fans support him. Many would welcome his return, while others believe his time at Manchester United is over and suggest he might be released this summer.
