FC Porto’s strong defense has brought attention back to Liga Portugal, which often lacks recognition.

Currently, Portugal ranks sixth in the UEFA standings, more than 11 points behind France in fifth place. This means Liga Portugal is rarely included in discussions about the top-five leagues, which are more prominent in Europe.

Despite this, Liga Portugal boasts two of Europe’s top defenses, with FC Porto’s Polish players making a significant impact.

The title race in Liga Portugal is very close, with FC Porto leading, followed by Sporting CP and S.L. Benfica, all within four points of each other. This season has highlighted exceptional defensive performances.

All three major teams in Portugal have conceded fewer than 20 goals in the league, a record not matched by any teams in Europe’s top five leagues.

FC Porto stands out, having only allowed 10 goals, largely thanks to their Polish defense.

The Dragons are aiming for their first Liga Portugal title since 2022, with their Polish defensive players playing a key role in this effort.

FC Porto’s Polish Defense: Recent Transfers

Jan Bednarek joined Porto permanently from Southampton, which was relegated from the Premier League, while Jakub Kiwior arrived on loan from Arsenal.

Bednarek, a vital player during Southampton’s difficult season, came in as a replacement for Pepe, who retired at the end of last season.

Kiwior, who had limited playing time at Arsenal, sought more regular minutes and joined the club on loan.

Bednarek signed at the beginning of the summer transfer window, while Kiwior joined later on.

Bednarek, the more experienced of the two, helped achieve three clean sheets before Kiwior’s arrival, establishing what is now known as FC Porto’s Polish defense.

The Title Race and European Challenges

The two Polish defenders have formed a strong partnership, aiding FC Porto in their pursuit of the Liga Portugal title and advancing in the UEFA Europa League.

Although Kiwior missed two games in February due to a minor injury, the duo has played together 17 times in the league this season. Their collaboration has been crucial as the Dragons have only faced four losses this season, with Bednarek and Kiwior being on the field together for only one of those defeats, which occurred in the UEFA Europa League against Nottingham Forest last October.

Together, they have achieved 13 clean sheets across all competitions, making them part of one of the best defenses in Europe.

With the addition of experienced player Thiago Silva in January, FC Porto’s defense has remained solid, and coach Francesco Farioli has confidence in the Polish duo to deliver results.

In the first leg of the UEFA Europa League Round of 16, Porto’s manager paired Thiago Silva with Bednarek, leading to a narrow 2-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart.

As they pursue success both domestically and in Europe, this Polish defensive partnership is vital for securing clean sheets and important wins.
