Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness stated that Jean-Philippe Mateta’s failed transfer to AC Milan prevented Crystal Palace from signing Dwight McNeil. Wyness shared this insight on the Inside Track podcast for Football Insider, suggesting that Palace delayed their move intentionally after losing the potential funds from the Mateta deal.

Mateta Deal Falls Through, Impacting McNeil Move: Wyness Suggests Palace Delayed

Wyness explained that while last-minute changes can frustrate fans, they are common in football. He noted that Palace likely intended to use the money from Mateta’s sale to finance McNeil’s acquisition. When Mateta’s transfer failed, the South London club allowed time to expire, leaving the Everton winger without a deal.

He mentioned on the Inside Track podcast: “You mentally adjust to these situations. I’ve experienced many transfer windows with deals falling through.”

“It’s a part of the game, and sometimes changes occur at the last moment. It appears Palace let this situation run out intentionally.”

“The Mateta situation clearly influenced their finances, and they decided they couldn’t meet McNeil’s asking price. So, the outcome of Mateta’s transfer wasn’t surprising, and later developments regarding McNeil followed.”

“I was taken aback by the announcement, but I wasn’t shocked that the move ultimately didn’t happen. Such occurrences are common.”
