Gareth Bale has stated that Manchester United made a stronger financial offer for him in 2013 before he signed with Real Madrid.

The Welsh winger was among the most desired players in football after an outstanding season with Tottenham.

Despite United’s interest, Bale had already decided on his move.

Gareth Bale discusses Manchester United talks before Real Madrid move

On The Overlap podcast, Bale recounted his transfer experience that led him to Santiago Bernabeu.

“I did talk to United [in 2013]. They actually bid more than Real Madrid. I spoke with David Moyes. But my heart was set on Madrid anyway. And I had an agreement with Daniel Levy,” Bale explained.

He added: “He didn’t want to sell me to a rival and strengthen another team. Levy made it difficult, but he kept his word in the end.”

Bale’s relationship with the then-Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy significantly influenced the outcome.

Although negotiations were challenging, Bale noted that Levy honored their understanding, allowing Real Madrid to finalize a record-breaking transfer.

Bale believes Real Madrid move was the right choice

Bale feels that choosing Real Madrid over Manchester United was the right decision.

“I think I chose the right one [based on the] last 12 years. I didn’t go for the wages with United; it didn’t get that far,” Bale remarked.

He concluded: “They offered more money for me, and a player too, but it didn’t really go anywhere.

“Once I spoke to Real Madrid, they reserved the number 11 jersey and had discussions with various people.”

The transfer made Bale a key player in one of Real Madrid’s most successful periods. During his time in Spain, he won multiple Champions League titles and scored crucial goals in finals.

Reflecting on his choices, Bale believes that selecting Madrid shaped the most successful phase of his career.
