There’s ongoing discussion about Ruben Amorim’s role, but even his biggest supporters wouldn’t have predicted Michael Carrick’s current success.
The team shows a clearer purpose now compared to when Amorim was in charge. Although it’s still early, the six matches under Carrick feel notably different.
A major issue was Amorim’s consistent tactics and his unwillingness to adapt. This reputation lingered throughout his time at the club.
He once famously claimed that no one, even the Pope, could change his formation. However, Gary Neville believes this current run might prompt him to rethink his approach.
On the Sky Sports’ Gary Neville Podcast, he stated, “Ruben Amorim must be watching Manchester United’s situation closely. I believe he’s familiar with many of these players and the coaching staff.
“He might be reflecting on what he would do differently in his next position, considering if he was perhaps too stubborn and didn’t adjust to the players’ needs.”
Why Amorim’s approach may not change
Neville’s suggestion about learning from past experiences seems valid, but if Amorim didn’t adapt when challenges arose, it’s unlikely he will change just because someone else succeeded.
Amorim built his reputation on his strong principles and did not bend under pressure. Six unbeaten games might not alter that mindset.
The better Carrick performs, the more it highlights Amorim’s shortcomings. Such comparisons could harm his reputation at Old Trafford.
Future clubs interested in him will likely focus on his ability to be flexible. This will be a key topic in any upcoming interviews.
If Neville is correct and Amorim does become more adaptable, he could gain from it. However, based on his past behavior, that’s uncertain.
