Shillong, August 26: NorthEast United FC secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Shillong Lajong FC in the first semi-final of the Durand Cup on Monday. The win ensured NorthEast United’s maiden appearance in the Durand Cup final.
Goals from Thoi Singh, Ajaraie, and Parthib Gogoi sealed the deal for the Highlanders, who will now face either Mohun Bagan Super Giant or Bengaluru FC in the final on Saturday.
The match saw NorthEast United dominate proceedings from the outset. Thoi Singh opened the scoring in the 13th minute, capitalizing on a well-timed cross from Jithin MS. Ajaraie doubled the lead in the 33rd minute with a brilliant solo effort, leaving the Shillong Lajong defense helpless.
Despite a spirited effort from Shillong Lajong, they were unable to break down the NorthEast United defense. The visitors’ defensive solidity was further bolstered in the second half when Ronney Willson was sent off for dissent.
Parthib Gogoi added insult to injury with a late goal in the 93rd minute, sealing NorthEast United’s victory and eliminating Shillong Lajong from the tournament.
With their place in the final secured, NorthEast United will be aiming to lift the prestigious Durand Cup trophy for the first time in their history.
