The current champions of the Indian Super League (ISL), Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG), have suspended their first team’s football activities indefinitely after failing to acquire commercial rights through a bidding process. This unexpected turn of events raises concerns about the future of both the ISL and Indian domestic football.
The club has also postponed training camps that were scheduled for next week until there is clarity on the league’s restart. The league is expected to resume only in mid-January 2026. While player and staff contracts will be reviewed next month, salary payments will continue without any disruptions.
Commercial rights bidding failure
In October 2025, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) invited tenders for a 15-year contract for ISL’s commercial rights. However, no official bids were received by the November 7 deadline. Although four entities, including the current rights holders Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) and FanCode, initially showed interest, no formal proposals were submitted due to concerns over financial requirements, revenue sharing, and operational clarity.
